Retirement or waiting?

Dear Readers,

I'm sorry if this has bummed anybody out or has frustrated anybody.

Admittedly, I've been having a bad time lately between the computer issues, not being able to cap or pic hunt, and I almost lost my job this week, compounded by a family emergency that happened at work this morning, and then getting home to read somebody telling me how to get pics it just tipped me over the edge.

I gave the heads up initially because I know some of you check daily, and I can't afford to get the better antivirus software until I get my first two week pay in three weeks.

Are you guys willing to wait this out?

Or do you want me to just retire instead?

The way the comments read on my "3 Weeks" post made it sound like the only way to stop having computer problems is to stop being Gensabi.

The way the comments read on the retirement post it sounds like waiting would've been fine as long as once everything got fixed I'd be back.

Honestly, I had a good idea for new capped pics just yesterday but I just can't make them until I have a 100% working laptop.

So I am asking you readers, what is it that you want from me?

Sincerely,
Gensabi

  3. For those of us who are among the quieter lurkers on your page, we can easily wait. Like Anonymous said above me, we'd hate to see a great captioner go, especially under circumstances like this. Take your time and when you want to and are able to get back to Captioning, we'll be excited to see you be back

  4. Gensabi, a new antivirus won't fix your computer. You need to start with a fresh install and install a goof antivirus and spyware program on that, I don't pay for antivirus ever and everything works well. You just need to keep everything updated and do regular scans while using a good browser like chrome or firefox with adblocker to help. Send me an email at asharatf@gmail.com and I can help you.

    1. Would the Windows 10 upgrade do the trick?

    2. No, what is happening is that there are viruses in the core windows files, what you need is a complete fresh install of windows. That means doing a reformat and then installing which would delete everything on the computer that hasn't been saved somewhere other than your computer, like an external hard drive or on multiple google drive accounts if the 15gb free version isn't enough.

    3. I'm not sure why one account works fine while the other doesn't, but everything you've described about the account you use for gensabi tells me the computer is filled with viruses. When it gets to that point anti virus can work but were talking it pro quality stuff that will cost hundreds of dollars. Reformating and reinstalling windows and then keeping antivirus and spyware programs uptodate and doing regular scans with a good secure browser and addons like adblocker while avoiding truly dangerous sites will make sure you don't go through this again for along time

  5. Antivirus doesn't solve everything. The problem with antivirus software is that, but nature, it is always one step behind hackers. There will always be a virus out there that your antivirus can't detect. Also, the only difference between a free antivirus and a paid antivirus is that the paid version deletes the virus, while the free version merely informs you of its presence so you can get rid of it yourself. A lot of people get by with just a free version.

What you really need to do is start being more careful. When your antivirus (even a free version) gives you repeated warnings about a web page, stop going there. Also, use adblock.

If you're willing to put in a little more effort, there is also another pretty good solution: build a virtual machine. A fake computer running inside your computer. The great things with those is that even if it's infected with a virus, you can just wipe the virtual machine clean without having to reinstall everything on your real operating system. They're basically a controlled environment where you can download all the viruses you want without consequences. Well, maybe not all the viruses. I'm not an expert, so there might be some that can recognize that your system is virtual and get through to the real one, but it's generally pretty safe. Might be worth considering.

  7. Ignore anyone who makes you feel like you should just stop. Your caps are great, and I, for one, am more than happy to wait it out.

  10. Please don't retire. You make some of my favorite captions. More than willing to wait however long it takes for you to get your computer fixed. :)

One of the anonymous posters on the "3 Weeks" thread here.

I don't think either of us meant for it to be taken that way, we were just trying to help. I love your captions, and I'm sure the other anon does as well.
