The Tumblr Fall News

Dear Readers,

Still retired.

Though I thought it was important to share this news.

Tumblr is phasing out all adult content on December 17, 2018.

It looks like the cappers from there are moving onto Blogger.

I just ran into a few new TG blogs discussing this. Some are just starting out on here and others are established blogs getting the word out about what's going on.

As a veteran of purges back in the early 2000s, here's my predictions as to what's going to happen.

01.) With a sudden influx of new blogs created in this vein it may draw attention to the TG community on Blogger. If that happens it could start a new purge on here.

Why do I say that?

Back in the day TG websites were the thing. Free web hosting. A lot of those went down. When they did refuge was found on Lycos Groups.

That didn't last long. Then people split between Smart Groups and Yahoo Groups.

Smart fell first. Yahoo lasted until they made changes in 2014. Yahoo now owns Tumblr too.

Sanctuaries tend to fall when an influx happens.

02.) This backlash is completely content driven and is pretty much being done by Apple.

Apple now has enough weight to literally alter what can and can't be seen online. That's bad.

Google is the other big one. If they get on board with what's going on, well, then we're all screwed.

There's no place left to go. At least not without censorship and funky rules.

This is why net neutrality is important.

03.) Everything might be fine. The fall of Tumblr might not spread. It might not be a domino effect of purges.

But there's other factors at play. New laws governing the internet on the international level.

Also, I haven't heard much more about the distinction between fiction and non-fiction content. That's the biggest reason why I retired.

If the content producers that brought down Tumblr come to Blogger then it's possible there could be a new purge on here too.

Also, I think this is changing the way content is being sorted out.

The adult content warning for the blog may act as a safety net for now, but for how long?

Also, this might bring down Deviant Art. That's the other thing to look at right now.

We need to see what happens online after December 17.

Sincerely,
Gensabi

  1. It is sad to think that the world is still like this. I Thank you for your thoughts. I really hope that the purge does not happen.

    1. Tumblr is definitely happening. It's actually made the mainstream news too. See, I discovered this originally from Youtubers. It's been reported by main news outlets since then.

That's not good. That's the kind of attention that can make it spread, especially if reporters start digging around into the obscure little niches of TG fiction online.

The past purges? No news at all. Tumblr was too big to fall. Shedding light on content created that may be considered too taboo.

Everything I've seen has referred to the content as an illegal form of pornography. That's why I don't know where the lines are now.

I mean, right now even mundane things are offensive to people.

We'll have to wait and see what happens. I just have a bad feeling that it's going to be a domino effect.

If content brought down Tumblr and those creators move here how long before they bring everything down?

Plus their movements can be tracked on Twitter. There's a hash tag about finding new platforms.

This woke people up that new things made by people aren't going to be in some database to be checked against. The database alone is paranoia inducing.

I've seen creators in the past have to keep moving on and on over and over again. Why? Because they get targeted for removal no matter what.

That might happen to the Tumblr crowd. That might get sites to look closer at other things that were already on the sites.

This is big. Bigger than I think some realize.

  2. I remember all those purges as well. While the community has been pretty resilient in general, some of the best captions were lost forever.

    1. True. There were so many limitations at the time too. If you saved any they might go on floppy disk which is irretrievable now. Computers didn't have much space back then. Some may be saved in the stupid AOL .art format that nothing else uses.

I'm one of the few that kept all my old caps. Most deleted them because they thought they'd still be online now.

Some deleted or didn't save any in fear of discovery by others.

This is the first purge being covered by the news. It's fueled by a tech company dropping the app of a platform for content creators.

The scary part is this might change the internet for good and begin more and more purges.

My thing is I'm scared that the definitions are changing. The line was pretty thin to begin with. A lot of the family member oriented body swaps could be considered too funky now.

Over the years I had moral struggles at times over it. The line was it's not real and just fiction, just fantasy.

Right now content is getting more scrutiny as porn. The Tumblr fall may start affecting other sites as its refugees seek refuge.

I'm retiring now because making new content frightens me in this atmosphere. Also, I've had my fill of purges. Never even really got everything uploaded on here. Fell by the wayside.

If these blogs go down I don't know where else to go, and whether or not it's safe to upload everything again or not.

  3. Sanctuaries tend to fall when an influx happens. California is proof of this.
